Rapeseed is an important oil culture. This plant was known 4 thousand years B.C., presumably obtained by crossing rapini with vegetable cabbage.  

There are two types of rape:

• spring rape

• winter rape

Separately identified Canadian rapeseed varieties have a low content of erucic acid and glucosinolates. These varieties are called canola. They have been developed to improve the consumer properties of the oil produced from the raw material. Canola oil has a more pleasant taste, smell, and color due to its low content of erucic acid, and chlorophyll.

India, Canada and China have the most extensive rape cultivation areas.

Rapeseed is used to produce oil, which is used in metallurgy, textile industry, and biodiesel production. Canola oil is used in the food industry.

Rape meal is a by-product of rapeseed processing, used as the base for the production of mixed fodder.
